KangGURU Travels to Yogyakarta and Sragen
written by Josie

JOGYAKARTA
It was really great having the opportunity to see another part of Indonesia. I liked everything about Jogja, in particular the shopping.I spent most of Friday afternoon walking around and sightseeing. I had never seen a becak before and discovered that they were incredibly cheap and efficient to get around on. Friday evening I was met at the hotel by 5 members of the committee from Student English Activity – UMY (SEA-UMY). We had pizza in Marlbioro Mall and discussed the following day’s speech competition. It was great to meet a group of students who were so enthusiastic about speaking and learning English. We arranged to meet on Saturday in the early afternoon.

The speech competiton was certainly very impressive. There were 10 finalists who were given the opportunity to express their opinions on a particular issue. These issues ranged from logging in Indonesia, to creating a better film industry. There were 4 of us on the jury, including 2 Indonesian teachers. It was certainly a close contest. The 3 winners were extremely good speakers. Congratulations to all of the participants.

After the speech competition we had a quiz to test everyone’s knowledge of Australia and Indonesia. There were lots of great prizes, like badges, keyrings and planners, which were donated by Kanguru. Everyone in the audience seemed keen to join and lots of fun was had by all.

After the quiz the committee gave the trophies to the 3 winners. Kanguru also had some great prize packs for these winners. There were T shirts, bags, pens, keyrings and lots more. Congratulations to all the winners.

I spent a further 4 days in Jogja and had a wonderful time. Borubodor was definitely the highlight! I got there very early in the morning and spent a couple of hours wandering around, enjoying the peace and the beauty. This is an experience that stays with you forever.

SRAGEN
After a day in Solo it was time to head to Sragen. I was picked up at the hotel by Anto and Risa. Anto is one of the teachers in Sragen and Risa goes to high school. Both were on the committee which hosted the speech competition.

On Friday night I was taken out to a local warung where I had a lot of delicious food. Many other members of the committee, whom I hadn’t met, also came along. It was great to meet so many students who were so interested in Australia. We spoke about our families, places we have traveled to and things we like doing. I found out a lot about Indonesia, especially about central Java.

On Saturday Anto and some friends took me to the outskirts of Sragen where batik is made.
