Kang GURU Travels to Lombok - November 2008

Ayu and Kevin together with the CEO of IALF, Mr. Geoff Crewes, traveled to Mataram in Lombok for the Final KGCC Get Together (GTG) activity for the English language clubs of the Kang Guru Connection based in that area - the ALFA, Sasak, L'Genda and Gado Gado clubs.

Ayu and I both worked in the KGI office on Friday the 21st of November but later that day we both flew to Lombok for the Final Lombok KGCCs Get Together. The clubs in Lombok have always been particularly active and it was terrific to see them in action. The first part of the weekend was a meeting and dinner with members of the Organizing Committee led by Pak Fadel from the ALFA Club based in Mataram. They chose a restaurant in Mataram Mall called Delicous. There were 8 club leaders and representatives tthere and the excitement was beginning to build for the Get Together the following day.

The Get Together was held at IAIN Mataram which is also the home for the LAPIS-ELTIS project from AusAID. Caroline from IALF Bali, a good friend of KGI, often vists IAIN Mataram as she is Team Leader of the ELTIS project. Many thanks to IAIN Mataram and to the Rector, Pak ............. The Get Together began with an introduction and welcome from Pak Sultan from the Gado Gado Club followed by remarks from Pak .......................

The clubs presented performances including poems, songs and dances for everyone to enjoy. There were close on one hundred club members in the hall with many, many more non-club members (all IAIN students I think) looking from the outside with faces pressed up against the windows of the hall.

Several club leaders gave reflections about their club and the involvement they have had with KGI over the past years. They talked about how KGI has helped their clubs grown and evelop and that now these clubs were more prpared to continue on for many years to come. In fact, the clubs have formed the Lombok English Club Network already and are discussing how it will work to help clubs in Lombok. KGI will continue to assist that network through the KGI Lombok-based Champion Pak Fadel from ALFA Club.

KGI's role at the GTG was to provide some language-based activities to the club members and so Ayu presented a Reader Quiz based on the September 2008 KGI magazine plus a terrific and quite loud activity called Yell Yell. It was a great hit in Genteng the week before and once again these club members loved it too. These Yell Yells were developed within 10 minutes by groups of 10 club members and they included popular songs with new words, choreography and dance and even rap. Fantastic!

Other KGI activities included a Music Quiz, learning the song G'day G'day, and finally a dance competition which really topped off the whole day. Everyone was up and dancing with many, many prizes awarded for skill and movement. As usual the day finally drew to a close after photographs - memories - were taken - hundreds of them in fact.
