KangGURU Travels to Ubud

Ubud Writers’ and Readers’ Festival 2006


Kang Guru Radio English was invited to present a workshop at the Ubud Writers’ and Readers’ Festival. The workshop was on the topic - Writing for Radio. The event was held on September 30th at Pura Dalem Ubud, a beautiful temple on a hill in the centre of Ubud.

Sue and Cheryl worked with a group of 15 to 18 year olds for three hours. The students wrote short interviews about their favourite musicians and songs and recorded them onto mini disk recorders. Then they watched a demonstration of how KGRE edits interviews on the computer using Adobe Audition.

At first the students were a little shy about speaking English, especially with people they hadn’t met before. However, they soon started sharing their opinions about types of music, singers, bands and songs. They very quickly became more confident. In no time at all they were busy writing their scripts in groups of three. The they practised and recorded their interviews. Time did not allow editing to be done there so their interviews will be edited and included in KGRE programs broadcast on Cassanova FM in Denpasar.

Thanks to the young people who participated in this workshop and to the volunteers who helped prepare the venue and make everything run so smoothly. It was a fun day and helpful to all involved.
